Why 30 minutes?

Research on urge duration consistently finds that cravings behave like waves: they build, crest, and recede whether or not you act on them — usually within 15 to 30 minutes. Two things stretch a craving out: negotiating with it ("maybe just one… no… but…") and staying inside the trigger that started it. This timer is designed to interrupt both.

The technique is called urge surfing — used in addiction treatment for decades. Instead of fighting the wave or obeying it, you observe it and outlast it. Every craving you ride out makes the next one weaker, because your brain learns the wave breaks.
